Shots and finishing across 52 leagues: who shoots, who scores
Three seasons of match statistics, 43,213 matches in 52 leagues, from the Bundesliga to Serie C and Austria's 2. Liga. Three things stand out. A team's share of the shots predicts its points almost everywhere (median correlation 0.76 across every league-season). How much a league shoots is a stable style: A-League (Australia) averages 28.8 shots a match, Premier League (Egypt) 21.7. And how well leagues finish differs less than fans think: most sit within noise of each other, with a handful of clear exceptions, Brazil's two divisions at the bottom of them.
1. Shoot more than your opponent, win
For each team-season we took its share of all shots in its matches and its points per game. Across 52 leagues and three seasons the correlation is 0.76 at the median, and it is positive in every league we hold. Whatever the level, from the Eredivisie to the National League North, the side that gets the ball into shooting positions more often than its opponent collects the points. Tactics, luck and finishing add the rest, but shot share is the floor.
2. Every league has a shooting style
Shots per match range from about 21.7 to 28.8, and a league's number barely moves from one season to the next (rank correlation 0.84 between the last two seasons). Home teams take 54.0% of the shots on average, which is the home advantage in one number.
One dot per league. Blue = converts clearly better than its peer group, red = clearly worse, grey = within the margin of error. Fainter dots are leagues whose statistics come from our second provider (see method).
3. Who is clinical, and who isn't
“Clinical” here is goals per shot on target, pooled over three seasons so one hot striker doesn't decide it. Among the 38 leagues on our main statistics provider, the median is 0.316: roughly one goal per three shots on target.
- Eliteserien (Norway): 0.339 ±0.012
- Bundesliga (Germany): 0.338 ±0.010
- ISL (India): 0.332 ±0.017
- League Two (England): 0.330 ±0.008
- Super League (China): 0.330 ±0.011
- Serie B (Brazil): 0.269 ±0.009
- Serie A (Brazil): 0.277 ±0.009
- Superliga (Romania): 0.293 ±0.011
- Jupiler Pro League (Belgium): 0.298 ±0.011
- LaLiga2 (Spain): 0.303 ±0.008
Brazil is the clear outlier. Serie A converts 0.277 and Serie B 0.269 of shots on target, three seasons running, over more than 1,100 matches each: a fifth fewer goals per shot on target than the Bundesliga or Norway's Eliteserien. Brazilian teams shoot as often as anyone (26.6 per match); the shots just go in less. Whether that is goalkeeping, shot selection or how shots are recorded there, the data alone can't say.

Method and caveats
- Data: team match statistics for the 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons (calendar-year leagues: 2023 to 2025), joined to our own results. A league is included only when every season it contributes has statistics for at least 80% of its matches and at least 300 matches in total: 52 of our 93 leagues qualify.
- Two providers, never ranked against each other. Our statistics come from two providers with different counting conventions: the second records about two fewer shots per match and a higher on-target share. So “most/least clinical” is judged within each provider's group (38 and 14 leagues), and the scatter shows the second group as fainter dots.
- Noise: the ± figures are 95% intervals on goals per shot on target. A single season of a league is not enough to call it clinical (year-to-year rank correlation only 0.55); three seasons pooled is.
- What we don't do: no expected goals, no per-match provider data, no odds. Aggregates only, computed by us. The per-match statistics stay on the providers' side; our own results, half-time scores and goal minutes are open data (CC BY 4.0, with a DOI).
