Two Clubs Win Everything: Measuring Competitiveness Across 93 Leagues
Analysis and interactive visualisations by Vyom · match data from football-charts.com
Every fan believes their league is either the most exciting in the world or hopelessly rigged for the big clubs — so we measured it. Using results from ~149,000 matches across 93 leagues on football-charts.com (top flights, lower divisions and women's leagues on five continents), each competition is scored on two independent questions: are the matches close? (the share of games decided by a draw or a single goal) and does the top run away? (how far the champion's points-per-game sits above the league's median team). The two lenses disagree more often than you'd think — the most dominated top flights in the dataset are the professionalising women's leagues, the most egalitarian is England's lower pyramid, and the tightest matches are played in North Africa. Every chart below is interactive: sort, filter and find your league.
1 · How far the champion runs from the pack
Champion's points-per-game gap over the league median, averaged across seasons. Spain's Liga F tops everything at 1.66 ppg; Brazil's Serie B (0.52) and England's League Two (0.53) are the great equalisers.
2 · Closely fought games vs blowouts
Share of matches ending level or decided by one goal. Egypt's Premier League leads at 75.8%, with Morocco and Brazil's Serie B just behind — while more than a third of matches in several women's top flights end three or more goals apart.
3 · One map, four league personalities
Both measures together. Coin-flip leagues sit top-left (close matches, no runaway champion), procession leagues bottom-right; La Liga is the classic "top-heavy but tight" case, and most of Europe's men's top flights crowd the balanced middle.
Method: 93 leagues, ~149,000 matches, all seasons in the Football Charts archive (typically 2020-present). "Closely fought" = draws plus one-goal margins; the domination gap = champion's points per game minus the median team's, averaged across seasons.
